This is a great question. First of all I'd like to say that I believe the 901 to be the ONLY speaker Bose has made that is any good (don't want to mare my record of being a Bose detractor).

The 901 has remained basically unchanged since its inception (aside from construction materials slowly going downhill). You should be able to use any series EQ with any series speaker.

I like the looks of the 901 on their stands; very art deco...

If I remember correctly, these speakers come with some kind of an equalizer, or balance device that sets the attenuation of the front and rear speakers. These were once considered one of the best speakers in the world, and the only advice I can give you is that they are very placement specific with regards to getting the proper stereo imagery. I think that you can use basically any type of equalizer with them, but try them first without to make sure you are not "colouring" their already excellent sound. Good Luck!!
