Your best bet is to go to dog training class, an eight week session is about 100 dollars, and will give you your basic training foundations. You may be able to find a cheaper dog training class through your local community education. Otherwise, look in the phone book for dog training facilities in your area, or search on line. I find that positive training with praise and treats is the best way to train, so look for a school that uses those methods. If you can't go to training class, check out a dog training book from the library. I like "How to be Your Dog's Best Friend" and "Dogs for Dummies". Also, check out the training links at: http://www.dogpatch.org/obed/obpage2.cfm

Most of it depends of your level of knowledge about canine behavior. First a dog needs to learn obedience. That is first and for most. If you do not know what you are doing join an obedience class in your area. These classes is to teach you how to teach your dog.
It is a fairly simple training but for the novice it is a monstrous task. Keep in mind that you cannot teach someone or something anything that you don't know. So educate yourself. If you are really good with animals and have a way with them you could probably do it yourself by following the instructions in a book.
There just is not enough space here to teach you. There are books on the topic and so many ways to go about it that it would gag the Pope. The knowledge is out there and all you have to do is go get it.
Who ever told you that you need to work your dog every day is right. You need a training collar & a training leash, that is used strictly for training, nothing more. And a little know how. Repetention, repetention, repetention, like most things we learn we learn through repetention.
In the obedience you can watch other owners struggle with their own little wild things. Sometimes the whole place is filled with laughter cause of some little mishapper. And remember who is the boss? You or your dog?

If you REALLY want to learn how to train your dog, then sign up for a class. They will teach you what to do and help you to figure out how to work with your dog. You will not regret the time or the money you spend on the class. You can go to the library and check out books on dog training, but reading a book is different than actually learning how to work with the dog.

well it depends on the breed of dog....
Anyways a great training tool is the head collar. I suggest gentle leader because it comes with full on instructions.
Also a clicker....
toys are a better reward than treats are

look up clicker training - take the info and adapt it to your situation. You can use a verbal cue instead of a clicker if you dont want to but one.
