I ask my american family (they live in Chicago) but they were sure that US won this war. I hope you know that Vietnam is still communist and they have a "american war crimes museum" in Ho Chi Mihn City (ex-Saigon)

Most Americans don't believe they lost the war. They like to believe they won that war and then pulled out -- it was negotiated to a truce and cease fire agreement at which point the U.S. left the country. The communists then broke the truce and cease fire agreement and crushed the fledgling country of South Vietnam. Those loyal to S. Vietnam never forgave the U.S. for hanging them out to rot in the sun as they did.
The American media is to blame for having made it an "Unpopular" war. Just as they are doing to the war in Iraq. So, if you like to think in terms of "Honor" and "Dignity," in helping to support a country that wants to remain "Free" and democratic, I suppose it was a "Good and Just" war. If you care instead to think in terms of "Colonialization" or "mercenary for hire," then it was a "Dirty" war. Any way you cut this one, the media swayed public opinion and the citizens demanded a complete and total withdrawl. A truce was negotatied and America left. Two years later, the communists broke the truce and invaded.

Apparently, people really don't read history in its fullest extent. America was winning the war, also fought very hard against a relentless opponent. However, politics back in the states cause for an immediate withdrawl from the country. The troops didn't lose the war, politics lost this war. It was very winnable and was in the waking, but nobody wanted to put forward the effort it took to complete that mission. Except the troops that were sent there without them wanting to do so. Oh yeah, the French were there first and got demolished/slaughtered, which caused America to step in, and that was a very very very big reason we were there. Along with precious rubber trees that are grown there. You ask why do we think we won the war? Tell me this, How many times have you heard America in a descussion then think about Vietnam and their current state in the international community. They are nothing, and for a long time they will be nothing. As for America, we will stand strong. So ask your self that same question again.

The War in Vietnam was won by the Armed Forces of the United States, but was lost by an inept US Democratic
Government and by the commie News Media and John Kerry and his anti-war SOBs. The "american war crimes
museum" has a picture of Hanoi John Kerry!!!!

The US won every battle. The problem was, the democrats decided the cost of winning those battles was too high (which it was) and decided to pull the plug on all US support in Vietnam. This included non-combat logistical support. Without US support, the south was incapable of repelling the north. So if you consider packing up your marbles and going home before acheiving the objective even though it was within reach, then yes, the US lost.

I don't think America won or lose, they withdrew, they quit.
No declaration of surrender was signed, only sa peace treaty.
Did America get it's way in Vietnam? No...in that sense they lost. Did Vietnam prosper and become a part of the world community, not until recently and not without the support of the US and many other countries. I wouldn;t say Vietnam won anything either.

Perhaps it's semantics, but Vietnam was not a "war", having never been declared as such. It was actually "The Vietnam Conflict". A lot of good people served in this conflict, some, by the grace of God, came home. Some did not. I refuse to believe that they died or were injured for nothing. To discuss this with someone who has appears to be looking to cause anger serves no purpose.
I edit this to agree with Mr. Johnson, I should be so eloquent.

You are right. The War Museum in Saigon has a picture of John Kerry in it. They consider his anti-war effforts instrumental to their victory.
A Ho Chi Minh City museum that honors Vietnam war protesters features a photograph of Sen. John Kerry being greeted by the general secretary of the Communist Party, Comrade Do Muoi.
The Vietnamese communists clearly feel that the American anti-war protesters were a very important force in undermining support in the United States for American war efforts.

WE lost this war because we were too slow to find out a new strategy against hit and run tatics and gurrilla warfare. Just like how the British lost the American Revolution. They stood in lines and got massacred while we hid and fired.

I would like to make a sarcastic and funny answer to this, but I
just cant. I hope, my new friend, that most Americans know that
the war in Viet Nam was not successful, that America , though
the greatest country ever, sometimes makes mistakes, and that war is USUALLY not the answer, but SOMETIMES is necessary
