You can become a non-professional social worker in some child welfare agencies with only a high school education (though these are quickly going way - thank goodness). You still can get a job in many social service agencies without a degree in social work (but you will only be able to work for the county and will not have the same amount of career advancement. The minimum degree you need to be considered a professional social worker is a BSW (Most state institutions have BSW programs check out CSWE.ORG for a full list - you do want to make sure that you go to an accredited program). To truly take advantage of the social work education you need an MSW (if you have a BSW you can often apply for advanced standing which allows you to complete the degree in one calendar year, otherwise an MSW is usually a 2 year program around 60 credits). Most states offer a licence at the MSW (some offer a certificate at the BSW level). Also many states will liecence post MSW at a clinical level. No MSW at this time can be completely taken online, though some are distance based and use a combination of online and other teaching strategies.

You need at least a bachelor's degree, so four to five years after high school, depending on the program. Here is one link for you to check out.
