Many escaltors are too narrow to have a passing lane. The passing side is always on the left. The expression, Stay to your right" is meant for the road and public buildings. What could be easier?
Many people stick themselves in the right lane and say, To hell with everyone else", but that doesn't make it right to follow their example. It makes us just as disrepectful and ignorant as them.
If you need to pass while on the short ride of an escalator, pass on the left...just like on a highway.

If you're talking about the moving sidewalks like in big airports, the lanes are usually clearly marked. Passing on an up or down escalator is not only rude but dangerous as well.

Just like when driving; pass on the left; slower moving people or vehicles should stay on the right! especially in the airports - move over and get your luggage out of the way! - other people may be in more of a hurry than you... Not everyone is considerate or even conscious of other people around them.

No such thing. If you were really trying to be proper and respectful, you'd stay at your spot and not try to pass someone standing on the escalator in front of you. It's only a few seconds' difference, after all.

Escalators are no passing zones unless they are quite wide. Then you stand right and pass left.

There is no "lane" for passing gas. Just let it rip and enjoy the horrified reactions of people trapped on the escalator.
Double points if you do it in an elevator; triple points if you claim it.
