No, I do not and you are exactly right, it is tradition that my wife loves to adhere to.

I absolutely love sparkling wine. It is without a doubt my favorite alcoholic beverage. As with any alcohol you don't want to buy cheap champagne. Although I don't actually like any French champagne I've ever tried. I much prefer California sparklers. I highly recommend J Schram by Schramsberg, but it's expensive. I also recommend all of Schramsberg's other sparklers. Mirabelle (Schramsberg's second pressing label) is a really good bottle and you can usually find it for less than $20.
Mumm Napa Valley also has a bunch of really good sparklers. Their DVX is fabulous but really expensive. Cuvee M is great and also under $20 a bottle.
Domaine Carneros and Domaine Chandon are both fabulous and I highly recommend them.

Personally, for me, champagne is highly overrated but it is a matter of taste. The chalky soil of the province of Champagne that influences the taste of the grapes and the dryness of the wine doesn't sit well on my pallette.
I've tried different quality champagnes and I haven't noticed a great deal between a cheap supermarket brand and a bottle of Moet! Each to their own. Personally I like Reisling wine which is at the opposite spectrum!

There are a few good champagnes out there, but most of the free stuff you get on New Years is really nasty.
However, suck it down for tradition and then get something better tasting to drink soon after.
Making mimosas with it is the best solution. Yum!!!
