Okay, my mom has been acting very strangely for the past 10 years of my life. She is in her late forties and is very irrational and mean-tempered. One minute she'll be all happy and smiley, and within the hour she'll have a major mood swing and start yelling and screaming and bitching about random things. She's never gotten physically abusive (although she has thrown stuff and my sisters and brothers). She is very perky and nice around other people but she is hell to her family. Do any of you psychologist majors/medical professionals know what the hell is wrong with her? It is getting out of hand and my brother and I are losing our sanity.

Sounds like a hormonal disorder to me. She should see a specialist, and get blood work done. If she's in her 40's I'm sure she needs to start replacing them all.
Hormone imbalance symptoms:
·Anxiety - ranging from constant worry to panic attacks.
·Nervousness
·Restlessness and inability to concentrate
·Irritability, impatient, angry
·Depression – total hopelessness and despair
·Forgetfulness, or broken train of thought
·Unsocial- (hating people and wanting to be alone.)
·Crying spells –coming and going over small issues
. Extreme mood swings

It definitely sounds like she has an emotional disorder. Either depression or bipolar. You need to find a way to get her to a psychiatrist and a therapist. Medication could really help her. Talk with your dad or the counselor at school.
It is true that some women experience mood swings as they approach menopause or peri-menopause, but these are too extreme! So don't blame it on hormones. Nobody should act this way and emotionally healthy people don't.
God bless you and good luck!

I don't know if she has a diagnosable illness, but your family situation screams to be looked at.

Talk to your school nurse and explain what's going on. No actual abuse, but stuff being thrown. The nurse will start the ball rolling on getting people to look in on you and talk to your mom.

She hasn't been DIRECTLY abusive, but this throwing-things nonsense is emotionally abusive and kids don't need it.

I may just be hormon imbalance, I mean she is at the menopausal age or stress. (or both) Maybe you should try having a talk with her when she's having a good moment and explain to her how this makes you feel in a calm voice. If she's feeling stressed or anxious she should talk to her doctor about this. Lexapro works wonders.

Those sound like symptoms of Bi-polar disorder!

You should Google Bi-polar disorder and have her see a doctor.
They would put her on medicine and she will feel alot better.

Good Luck!

She could be manic depressive/bi-poar. They have extreme mood swings.
