Actually there is no real "regular Spanish" every area has variations on Spanish. the Spanish they speak in Mexico is different from the one they speak in El Salvador or Colombia for example. It is like American English, it varies from place to place. A southerner uses different words and phrases than a New Yorker, even though they use the same basic language.

American-Spanish depending again on the area, can be derived from Mexico (West) or Cuba and the Caribbean (east). True Spanish is Castilian Spanish, and that does not sound like what we consider "Spanish" per say and is really only spoken in Castille Span.

I had to learn "Mexican Spanish" in school, that royally pissed of my mom who is from El Salvador because for her I was learning a form of "Low Spanish".

Yeah people still think like that back there.

There is no such thing as American Spanish. There are a bunch of dialects and different slang and regional words from different countries just like in any other language. If you learn standard Spanish, you can communicate with anyone from any Spanish-speaking country. It's best to avoid Spanglish and Tex-Mex. This is not real Spanish. They're more of a dialect. I am of Latin descent, and I find it kind of fun to learn how people say certain things in other countries. I have friends from different Latin countries, and I've learned their local words. It's not hard. You just have to keep your ears open.

The american spanish doesn't have the accents. They don't use the same words as other spanish people. That is because some spanish people are from Mexico and some spanish people are from Spain. My mom and dad were born in france. So was i. And my sister was born in Spain. Spain is a very beautiful country and a very nice place to go.
