well, there is freedom of speech where you are free to say just about anything so long as it does not directly incite violence. So that is the 1st amendment to the Bill of Rights. There is also right to privacy, freedom from illegal searches and seizures...all these amendments guarantee individual rights but there are daily violations of all of these so our court system is very busy with all the challenges. There are a lot of laws and they are always changing and they differ from state to state. It is confusing to be an Amercian sometimes.

Dude! It's the greatest country in the world! There's freedom in every which way! No wonder so many people from other countries wanna come here! My country is a melting pot--you're free to do what you please--that's our Bill of Rights! People from all countries come here cuz it's a multicultural nation! And then I figure, "I'm among the lucky people in this world! I was born in the land of the free and the home of the brave! Other people don't get the same opportunity to express themselves in religion or speak their minds! It's just great to be an American citizen!

Haard to answer when the Constitution is being suberted and the ideals of the bill of rights destroyed...
Some basic ideas: The constitution was the first organized set, fixed ssytem of governmetn in the world. It limited the Power of the Governemnt and set rights for the people. That's a big thing.
Freedom: Named in the Declaration and set into law in the constitution, this has traditonally been the ideal of Anmerican Politics. Unfourtunalty, the term is used for political gains today where it should be the one thing we can all agree on. However, that is not so now (see Gingrich and limiting freedoms to 'catch terroists')
Talk about how we have used those freedoms to change the country: How does that make you feel that you can protest (less and less) without having to fear arrests or summary judgement? and the fact that our elected leaders have to resond to the voters.
That should give you a little to talk about.
Oh,. and tyo the poster above? The Fist Amendment has no conditons. it says "Congress shal make no law" Not no law unless. No. Bloody. Law.

The best thing to do is contact someone who in the last couple of years got their citizenship in this country. You see, most Americans don't know what its like because we have never tasted other forms of Government. Unless you were in the military and stationed in places like, Guam, Philippines, Spain, Japan or South Korea, you don't know the rights, Freedoms and many things you can do in this country, but not in many others.
In America, the only drawback you have is limited by your desire and imagination. You can work and achieve what-ever goals you set for yourself.
And the great thing is, we can say what we want, talk bad about the President or some other elected official. In Iran, you get yourself killed saying something against their top leader, as in many other countries.
Check it out and good luck.

I love being American. We have freedom of speak even when it makes some else mad. We can choose where to live & go to school. We can choose where to work & quit when we do not like it. We choose how many children to have in our families.
We vote & then complain that our canidate did not win & feel justified (OK not a great thing but freedom). We can own guns with laws to control crime.
I love my right to vote for the canidates that I chose after research. I love the right that others have to live & worship the way they see fit. We have more rights than most countries &
complain the loudest but that is what freedom is all about.

Great we have more freedom and people here are protest more than anywhere else.
Muslims here don't riot over cartoons.
People around the world hate us but will do anything to come here.
When anyone is in trouble we are the first to show up with aid.
I don't know of any other country that gives more and has done more for other countries as much as the U.S.

I have some close friends who moved to America from East Germany a number of years ago.
They were shocked at how much Americans disputed authority. When the wife graduated from college I went to the ceremony, and they were both dumbfounded at all the graduation shenanigans. Their comment was that in Germany everyone obeyed.

I like being able to bad mouth my own government. But you know, what I used to feel I could do freely ...I don't think or feel I can surely be is the case anymore.
My simply answer to your question THESE days is ...I am unsure what it is to be and AMerican.
Things are changing drastically. Up is down and down is up.
Very Alice in Wonderland.
