I would like to get into Hapkido. I am a womanly woman and not boyish at all. In fact I hate anything out doors (bugs, reptiles, and etc.) and like everything neat and clean like flowers and wine =) .

My husband has been in the martial arts for years and I think it is quite gruesome =( but I am interested in Hapkido. I think it would be neat to have that under my belt.

My question is, I have small bones, do you think I could get really hurt if I trained? I am willing to be tough to learn this type of martial art. I am also wondering if I would get bruised shins as well.

Any input would be most appreciated. Mature answers please I don't need a smart a$$ remark! ..lol..

Happy New Years!

Any physical activity will almost guarantee you an injury or two, but they'll train you how to properly do break falls and such to avoid injuries.

The most I've ever had was a pulled muscle or a fractured toe (my fault of course) So no you won't get a Major injury. And just let them know that you need to work your way into it and not just jump head first into the class.

Your husband might even give you some pointers to get you started.

But yeah, Hapkido is a little rough, but it's an excellent Martial Art To learn, so yeah, go ahead and study it if you want, it's just getting used to it.

First, I think it's great that you're interested in sharing the martial arts with your husband. Hapkido is a great way to learn self-defense, but training in any martial art will occasionally involve bruises and other injuries.

As a beginner, you will be treated as such and won't be expected to be tough as nails right away. It takes time to learn the techniques, and your partner will work with you slowly and softly at first. However, with time and practice you will be required to step it up a little and give pain as well as receive it in order to effectively learn how to do a joint lock, properly locate a pressure point, etc.

Hapkido is great for men and women of all sizes. If you're petite, you will be underestimated, which is a huge asset. People won't expect you to be a trained self-defense practitioner.

One question you have to ask yourself: why hapkido? Is it a martial art suggested by your husband or something YOU are interested in doing? There are many other martial arts out there that are more a "sport" and less hand-to-hand combat.

My advice is to watch a hapkido class. Talk to the instructor and talk to him/her about your concerns.

Well you will get a bruise or two that happens. As you learn you will use a twisting action on kicks, punches, and blocks. The twisting helps to divert a direct blow helping to keep you from getting bruised. With exercise and technique your bones and body will get stronger.Welcome to the world of Korean martial arts.
