My 5 month old kitten has suddenly taken an interest in meowing at my turtle. Before we left for South Carolina for Christmas she had no interest in him whatsoever. He lives in the kitchen in a 26 gallon aquarium next to the kitchen table. Now that we are both home, she will jump up on it, lean against the chair, and start meowing at him. If I walk over, she'll look at him and then at me and let out a little meow. I was planning on getting her a playmate in May/June. Another kitten. Do you think she just wants to play with my turtle? I'm kind of curious why she has suddenly started to meow so much!

I've had her since the beginning of November and I've always left her alone before so that's why I find it curious to know why she is meowing at my turtle. She knew he was up there because I've shown him to her but she never took an interest in him. :)

I said playmate in May or June because I am a college student and feel that it would be best to get another one when the semester ends. More time to be around while it adjusts to the new surroundings. Also with springbreak being in March, it wouldn't be the best idea to get another kitten if I am going away during that time.

She's probably just curious about it. Can't understand it. I would probably be laughing at the kitty. Now about your turtle. Please make sure you wash your hands after handling your turtle. In the 1960s, it was a fad to have turtles.....so everyone had some. Then they basically had an epidemic of salmonella in the US, directly associated to the turtles. They didn't know they had to wash their hands after handling their turtles. So be careful. Best of luck to you.

She might be interested because the thing that she had thought was a rock or some other in-animate object is now moving. It might be she is getting frisky and wants to play or she wants attention. When you were gone maybe she happened to jump near it just when your turtle was out of it's shell and she maybe had never saw it out of its shell and now is suspicious about it. Like if a cat thinks something might be dangerous they go near it and investigate by carefully tapping it or touching it then jumping back. She can't because the aquarium so she is meowing to get you to come over and be sure its okay.

Did you leave the kitten by herself? Maybe when you were gone she was lonely and took an interest in the turtle.

Another kitten will make a good playmate. Sometimes the best cat toy is another cat.

Your kitten has gotten older and bolder. She just wants to play. You might think about a playmate for her sooner than this spring.

It sounds like she may be in heat. Female cats will howl at anything when they are in this condition. As far as getting her a friend, I have never found cats brought together get along that well, unless they were litter mates. They are solitary animals by nature.
