My Yorkie is awesome with kids and is very tolerant and loves to be loved, but really almost ANY breed of dog can be good with kids if you train it to be and train your kids to be good with it. Try your local Humane Society, they will help you pick a dog with a good temperament who will be good with kids.

A older and more mellow dog.A puppy would chew and nip and take time to train but if you get an older dog they will certainly be more calm and less hyper. You could try some breeds like a lab, golden retriever,or a beagle.Smaller dogs are a little more protective and might bite.Labs are very good natured dogs and have lovable personalities they are very good for a family pet.Golden retrievers are nice and dont see anyone as a stranger they are great for people willing to give them lots of love. And beagles are good and lovable like the others. But a beagle is what you'd need if you want something smaller and less likely to accedentally nock over your children.I hope you get a wonderful dog! -Yasmin

I don't think a dog is your answer. Big dogs just like little ones should be inside at night - they will only bark at everything - not just the things you want them to bark at - if you leave them outside because they will be lonely, bored and separated from their pack. And you don't want any dog that attacks any human with small kids around unless it is a protection dog with extensive training - they can't differentiate a UPS man from a child from a burglar - they need a human to give commands that they follow unfailingly. They need to be socialized with you and the kids and the rest of the household. And no guarantees on the chickens - most dogs have prey drive to varying degrees and loose chickens are a huge temptation. I'd suggest an alarm system instead.

Boxers are a great dog for kids, but no puppy for little kids. I do not think a beagle puppy is a good choice for small children. Our beagle is 6 months old and she still chases my son who is 10 around and goes after his feet and ankles and loves to chew. And they are a lot of work to house train. And if you have small children you won't have the time. I would suggust and older beagle. There are alot of rescues around. Another choice is a grey hound. My friend has 3 of them with 4 kids under the age of 9. She got them from a rescue. Cost a 100 but needles and fixed. Good Luck and have a safe and happy new year

There are many breeds of dog that fit this description. You need to decide what other characteristics you'd like for your pet. For instance, do you want an adult dog or a puppy? Do you prefer long hair or short hair? What activity level are you and your family capable of dealing with? Large, medium or small breed? How much yard do you have? Do you want a pure-breed dog or a mix?

I don't recommend any dog be brought into a home with children under five. The fact is, small children can't understand how to treat a dog, and it creates a lot of risk to both kids and dog. If you really feel you must get a dog, I would recommend Newfoundlands (but they need lots of exercise, and be prepared for shedding and drool, still number 1 choice for kids), boxers (easy to live with, my baby cousin chewed their boxers ear off and the dog didn't do anything to her, very patient, but again, they drool), Golden Retriever or Labrador Retriever (need exercise, shed more than some would like, but are wonderful dogs and easy to train). There are very few breeds of small dog I would recommend as its easier for small kids to hurt small dogs, but if you must have a small dog, beagles are a good choice. It might be best for you to look into adopting an older dog who has been around kids, look up a breed rescue service for any of the breeds you are interested and they might be able to find an older dog for you. Puppies can be the worst decision for small kids because like small kids, puppies don't yet know how to behave.

Labs are usually known for being patient and tolerant, also German Shepherds.
No matter what breed of dog you get, you must educate your children to treat the animal with respect.
They must learn not to pull the dog by its tail, blow in its face or get too close to the food bowl.
Any dog, sufficiently harrassed, can lose its patience.
Better to work with the children and teach them respect than have to get rid of a dog that merely defended itself against torture.

The best kind of dog to have,if you have little kids,is a Boxer. They are the BEST! Boxers are very loyal, faithful, and very playful. Boxers are also kind and will look out for you. I would consider a Boxer for these reasons.
But even though Boxers are all of these things,
they are sometimes hard to train.

I would research the diffrent breeds and behavior that is typical for that breed. You don't want to get a dog that loves to run when your kids love to play video games . After you research that you can make a educated dission which would be best for your family.

Small dogs are generally not as good with children as larger dogs. A lab or golden retriever is your best bet. I have had my Golden Retriever for years and she is very gentle with my baby niece and she is a great watchdog too.
