It is currently near impossible to win an election in the United States without first declaring yourself to be a Christian. Christian crosses are displayed in public parks, in front of government offices, courthouses, and on other public property. The Ten Commandments are also on government owned land, and "In God We Trust" is on American money, an endorsement of monotheism which violates the First Amendment. Is it impossible to keep religion where it belongs, in homes and Churches, Temples, and Mosques? Why must Christianity be so publicly displayed, and is this invasion of religion where is does not belong damaging to American society?

holdingoutformyprince, I do not walk around with a shirt that says "God doesn't exist", and I have never seen such a shirt. It would, however, take hours to count all the shirts I have seen with bible verses, jesus slogans, or best or all, "Got God?". I do not parade my lack of theism, and yet many theists do just the opposite.

The monarchy of England is your enemy, and was also to the first settlers, who came to America in search of freedom.

They publicly declared "We will have no king over us!"
and set up the Constitution and Declaration of independence.

If you take a closer look at the monuments, obelisks, architecture and even the Latin on your money you would see that The US is NOT glorifying God; The eagle is straight from Rome, the "all-seeing eye" of masonry and the Illuminati defies the true God, and instead puts "trust" in the false god of this world, who is Lucifer and Satan.
You are being misled to "stamp out" the Christian belief, while the rule of the false god is being imposed upon you. Do your research and don't be fooled.

Because we are free citizens of this country too. You can display anything you want anywhere. The government can't create a law establishing a religion or prohibiting the free act of religion. So it belongs where ever I want to take it. Be the post office or the park. You forgot that God is mentioned on every memorial in Washington D.C. And no, it isn't damaging to society.

Maybe you are right. The US of A should start making a separation between religion and state, as most modern countries have.

Coming back to your question: why must Christianity be so publicly displayed? Well, the Christians believe they know a way to be saved. The Christians love you and are afraid that if you don't use their method you won't be saved. So if is only an act of love of them to tell you about the God they know.

Which doesn't take away the question if it wouldn't be better if they wouldn't make this job easier if they started showing God's love towards everyone, instead of shouting that people should obey God's laws. It's about His love for the world, not about his laws. If you love your father you automatically want him to be proud of you and don't do things he would not like you to do.

Hmm.. I think argumentative made this point even clearer. This nation was founded by christians for christians. We are living in their society. Just because religious paraphenelia is virtually everywhere, doesn't mean you have to look at it. BUT! it doesn't mean that they have to rub it in our faces (which they do). I see your point, but if that is the only injustice the American government has imposed upon you that you can see, its time to open those eyes a little further. There's a lot worse going on in this subject than you realize.

That's like asking why gays must close down public streets for their "pride" parades. Why do they need to be so in-your-face?

See, it's not just theists that are trying to promote themselves. For example check out the atheists on this forum.

I guess everybody has an agenda. Politicans will pander to anybody to buy a vote. Gays are looking to be considered mainstream. Atheists evangelize the Christians and Christians evangelize the atheists. If they have freedom of speech, you have freedom to ignore it.

Part of the "why" is because Christianity, in particular, is pro-witnessing. But another is that politicians realize that the majority of religious people in America are Christian, so they wear their Christianity as a badge of honor (even when it's a false Christianity). I wish I knew how to keep it in the homes and churches/temples/mosques. I especially wish I knew how to keep it out of government. All these states passing "marriage protection" acts makes me sick to my stomach--and I'm not even gay. I'm just fair-minded, and I'm historically educated enough to remember that many of our founding fathers were Deists, and that America was founded not on "Christianity" but on "Freedom of Religion."

Amen, brother. Keep religion in churches, where it belongs!

I think one of the reasons why public declaration of religion is so prevalent is that it is taboo in our society to challenge a religious assertion. If someone says their car is fast or their dog is smart, we can challenge them without seeming rude or crude. When someone claims that they speak to a god or deity or that angels watch over them, it is considered impolite to challenge these beliefs. Since you can say you believe whatever you want and no one will challenge you, people tend to believe what they say, hence the following.

I say call a spade a spade; when some jerk says "Praise the Lord!" say "praise who? and for what?" and make them explain their bizarre statement.

(BTW, I held these beliefs about religion long before Dawkins or Harris published books with these arguments as punchlines)

If you can find the answer-you please let me know.

The thing now is that the Evangelicals are in a big upswing, and dear ole Georgie is pushing them along. So, we are hearing more and more from them. But, in 2 years, he will be gone. I do hope they die down then.

But, living is a predominately Christian country, it is always going to be hard on the rest of us. This is what they want to hear IF it is their way of thinking.

It is only after the Christians starting to try to force their beliefs on me through the law that I began to have a problem with them. If they would mind their own business regarding abortion and homosexuality, I would not care less where they want to display the 10 commandments. Unfortunately Christians do not follow thee 11th commandment. Jesus said to love one another.

Um excuse me, but we were founded a Christian nation, we grew and thrived as "one nation under God", and our most of our nations greatest events; the start of public schooling, the abolishment of slavery..., were due to Christians following God's will. If you don't like my faith, tough. Sadly, our nation compromises too much trying to make people like you happy, removing God from schools and Christ from Christmas. And the more we ignore God, the worste our society gets. Get a grip people.
