You could cover it with a hankerchief, I have done that before.

Proper flash exposure is all about the distance. Your flash has a certain range where the pictures will be properly exposed. Get too close and it will be too bright. Move farther back for flash pictures and they will be perfect without the need for taping a tissue onto your flash.

Also, see if your camera has different flash modes. If it has one for action pictures, then the flash won't fire at full power because it will need to charge up again quickly. Or if you have a close up with flash mode, that will also reduce the flash power.

I assume you are refering to a flash that is part of the camera body, not one that you attach. Try using something to cover it to diffuse the intensity of the flash, something like a piece of white facial tissue or toilet paper (just a single ply). Just use some tape to tape it in place. Will definitely reduce the effectiveness of the flash for any distance, but should work ok for closer shots. Give it a try.

If your flash has a movable head, try using "Bounce" flash. That's when you point the flash up to the ceiling at about a 45 degree angle. Be sure the ceiling is white, or close to it, or you will pick up the color. Good luck.

Cover it with something to diffuse the light. You could just turn off the flash. Maybe put some sun glasses in front of it. I need to make mine brighter!
