I don't seen any benefits to widescreen. I've never missed anything substantial in a movie and I view them using full screen. The black bars at the top and bottom also cause the viewing area to shrink, so even if you can see the extended edges, the picture is smaller so its harder to see.

that is purely achieveable by using the television settings. yet filmmakers initially action picture their video clips in a widescreen format even wider than widescreen TVs, so there'll nevertheless be black bars. watching it in finished show screen the two: a million) Distorts the image = much less element 2) decrease off aspects of the image

Dude if you have a widescreen tv embrace it. Every movie is edited and cropped. it;s true widescreen does let you see the extra surroundings in the picture but like the other guy said, the camera still focus's on the guy in the middle.
