Taking 8 year old daughter for a Blood Test.

Undecided on telling her - because she hates Needles, and reacts very badly around them.

Should i just take her ? That way she'll have less time to worry about it.

What should i do ?

It's kind of like saying.. yeah honey, we're going to Disney land and then you pull into the dentist's office. Just tell her.. that way she can't be angry at you for not telling her!

I'd tell her beforehand. Remember that she's going to find out that there are needles involved whether you tell her or not, but if you don't say anything first, she'll learn not to trust you. Sure, she'll worry about it for longer, but once it's all done, you can point out to her that it wasn't as bad as she made it out to be, and that she worried about it for longer than it actually took place. She's going to be forced to deal with things she doesn't like in life. As a parent, you're doing more harm than good by trying to shelter her. Better to simply let her know what she's in for, let her worry, and then explain just how little a deal it was once it's all behind you. Of course, identify with her by telling her about your own experiences with needles (or at least acknowledging that they sting when going in), but reinforce that the whole experience only takes seconds to finish and won't do any long-term damage. Let her learn that she can count on what you say, and that you're not going to trick her.

I would be honest and tell her or she will never trust you when you take her anywhere again. Tell her to bring something to distract herself while they draw her blood and reward her after. My daughter had the same issues with needles and my sister said that at least we would never have to worry about her using drugs that require needles when she got older! Good luck!

Don't tell her. You're the parent and adult. I'm guessing that what you're doing is in her best interest. Most 8 year olds do not have the level of understanding as an adult. She'll get over it.

MAYBE IT SOUNDS TERRIBLE - BUT I AGREE WITH YOU -OBVIOUSLY SHE'LLKNOW WHEN YOU GET THERE, BUT I DON'T SEE WHY YOU'D TELL HER DAYS IN ADVANCE...IF SHE'S JUST GOING TO WORRY...SHE'LLEVENTUALLY GET USED TO THE FACT THAT NEEDLES DON'T HURT THTA MUCH AND IT WILLNOT BE AN ISSUE ANYMORE...

I don't think it would be wrong to not tell her. She might only worry more. (You might want to give your dr a heads up though, so they will be aware that she is UNaware.)

you should at least tell her before you get there so she does not freak out, plus she will be very angry with you if you dont.
