Sweet potatoes and yams are the easiest things to cook. Buy them, cut off just the tips or pointed ends. You can roast them in a pan covered with foil or wrap them in tin foil and bake right on the oven rack. You can microwave them.
Oven bake, 375 degrees for 40 minutes, or until you can squeeze the sides of the potato and it gives easily. Microwave for 15 minutes, turning the potato over half way through.
Make a mixture of 3 tablespoons brown sugar and a half teaspoon of cinnamon. Use alone, or after splitting the potato or yam open, spread on a bit of butter or margerine, and then sprinkly to taste with the cinnamon sugar. Want to know a neat trick? To make the sugar mix smoother, grind the brown sugar and cinnamon in a coffee bean grinder first. Makes fine powdery brown sugar mix that blends well with the cooked potato and butter. Enjoy! Some people like to put a bit of water in the baking pan, or they butter the skin before wrapping in foil and baking. If you microwave it, prick the skin in a couple places with a fork first. Happy New Year.

Peel the sweet potatoes and slice into a micro-wave safe dish. After you have about a two inch layer of sweet potatoes dot them generously with firm (not melted) butter and sprinkle with brown sugar. I use organic everything ( potatoes, butter, sugar ) I find the flavor much better. Cover your dish and micro-wave, full power for about 10 minutes. I do not measure anything. I cook by sight. If you have a lot of sweet potatoes just repeat another layer the same way. You can increase cooking time according to amount of potatoes and texture preference. I have never had a problem with over cooking sweet potatoes this way. Good luck, this is a very delicious and healthy vegetable.

Sweet Potatoes in Orange Cups
6 sweet potatoes, unpeeled
1/2 stick butter, softened
1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 cup chopped pecans
6 large oranges (heavy for their size)
48 mini-marshmallows
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Cover sweet potatoes with cold water in a pot and boil until fork tender. Peel the potatoes, transfer to a bowl, and mash. Stir in butter, orange juice, and pecans and mix until incorporated.
For the orange shells, cut each orange in half and scoop out the pulp using a small knife or grapefruit spoon. Reserve the pulp for another use. Fill each orange shell with the potato mixture and top off with the marshmallows. Bake until hot and the marshmallows are melted.

you can just treat it as a normal potato, so cook it in the same way, and flavour it with the same things, maybe use some herbs and oven bake, adding a small amount of butter over the top for the last 20 minutes of cooking

There are several ways to cook sweet potatoes. You can bake them. Wrap in foil and bake at 375 degrees for about an hour, or you can peal and boil them in a pot. med. high for 30-6. min. Time depends on size and amount. After they are fork tender, or soft, you can add butter, brown sugar, and Cinnamon. After the sweet potatoes are done boiling you can bake them with butter, brown sugar and Cinnamon in the oven at twenty minutes-thirty minutes at 350 with marshmallows on top. Also check the web for other ways of fixing them.

I bake them the same way I bake white potato's, in the oven wrapped in foil with a little butter over them. When they are done serve and top more butter. They are bland that why most people make them into something else, like pie. You can put Cinnamon on them if you like.

The next county over from mine is the home of the Yamboree in the fall. I love sweet taters, (not potato).
The simplest way to cook them is bake them in an oven, (do not wrap in foil). When they are done, (about an hour at 350) take them out bust them open and slather on the butter.
You can't beat 'em.

Not very exciting, I suppose, but my favorite way to prepare a sweet potato is to bake it in the oven for about an hour. Add butter and cinnamon at the table. Other possible toppings (but not all at once! ...lol....):
a sprinkle of brown sugar
maple syrup
honey
orange zest or flavoring
lemon zest or flavoring
