My 11 month old is just getting over a cold (I had him to the doctor for it twice and he has finished his medicine) and still has a left over cough. He had a temperature last night and still has it today. I have been giving him motrin to keep it down. Other then the little bit of left over cough he doesn't have any other symptoms. I did see that he is cutting a tooth but my mom says that his fever is too high for just teething. I know mom knows best but is this something I need to take him to the ER for (she has a tendancy to over react and thinks he has pneumonia)? Or should I just keep with the fluids and motrin? Advise would be appreciated.

The highest his temp. has been was 102 but it has been hanging around the 100.4 range more (taken in the ear).

Fever is a normal and healthy response to having an infection and does not need to be beaten down. That being said, we often recommend that to treat fever with Motrin or Tylenol to make them feel better as this often helps them with the other fever recommendations such as drinking fluids and sleeping. I agree that without other sick symptoms, this is likely a cold which will pass; cough may continue for weeks following a cold. It is important however to encourage fluids and return to you doctor or the ER if your doctor is not available, if she stops wanting to drink, has a decrease in wet diapers, has any trouble breathing, is difficult to console or has any other new concern. While your doctor, your mother may know many things about children, you certainly know more than anyone about your child; if at ANYTIME you are concerned about your child's health, you owe it to yourself and to her to have her checked out with your doctor.

Depends on what his temp is. You didn't mention that. For an 11 month old, you wouldn't want it to go above 103 for very long. When they are cutting teeth, it typically runs low grade, 99-101. If he's not vomiting, or if he doesn't have diarrhea, and the temp isn't too high, keep with the fluids and alternate Infant Tylenol and Infant Motrin. If it gets too high, he seems lethargic, or is having trouble breathing, then take him to the ER.

You are doing great mommy. The temp is normal with having a cold AND teething! Just keep on giving him Motrin and switch off with Tylenol every 2 hours, and he will be feeling better. Take him to the ER if his temp goes over 104!

don't worry about the 100 temp that's not bad the cough is normal to be leftover for up to 2 weeks i wouldn't worry if his is acting fine than Id let him go.. the best way to control a fever is to alternate Tylenol and Motrin.. make sure that he gets plenty of fluids and monitor his temp. the alternating thing really works and helps control it better. good luck

well if you are concerned take him to the ER, if his fever is under 103 and responds to the Motrin/tylona(should switch back and forth ever other dose) but would make an apt with his Dr as soon as you can. how is he acting? is he acting sick. or is the fever and cough only concern. just becarefull of dehydration and RSV is going around big time.

keep with the fluids and motrin, and keep an eye on his fever. if it gets worse not better then take him to the er, dont take chances on you son's health. at 11 months old he is pretty much past the "teething is a problem" stage

Keep an eye on him and see how he goes for the next couple of hours. If he seems weak, unable to get a breathe, hard to rouse or blue-lipped then get him to the hospital straight away. Hopefully, it's just the tail-end of the cold that he needs to work through on top of his new tooth. Go with your instincts and if you feel he needs a doctor then take him.

If it gets too high give him a cool bath to help lower the temp other than that he will be fine.
