Check your local library. They usually have free access to that kind of stuff. All you'll need is a library card.

Some US Gen Web county level sites (click on state, then county) have some census transcriptions.

Some public libraries have subscriptions to census images.

Many large LDS Churches have Family History Centers. They are free to everyone, Mormon or not. Many FHC's have census subscriptions. (You will pay for paper copies.)
