I think of sex as just a mechanical act, whereas intimacy is making love to someone you care about. I see them as seperate things.
What do you think?

Intimacy involves feeling of mutual love between the couple which transcends just physical pleasure. Sex without intamacy is just lust, satisfying just bodily appitite.

Intimacy is complex in that its meaning varies from relationship to relationship, and within a given relationship, feelings of closeness may be connected or confused with sexual feelings. In other relationships, intimacy has more to do with shared moments than sexual interactions. In any case, intimacy is linked with feelings of closeness among partners in a relationship.

This is not a precise definition but even without being specific, it seems that intimacy and healthy relationships go hand in hand. Indeed, intimacy is a basic ingredient in any meaningful relationship: the basis of friendship and one of the foundations of love.
Sex is just that.. sex..the act, just sex seems to be impersonal

They are separate, but you can be intimate without sex. Actually, most intimacy has nothing to do wiht sex. Intimacy is talking about your innermost thoughts and feelings, and connecting on a spiritual and mental level. Sex is just a physical act, but if you have that spiritual and emotional connection, you can have intimate sex.

This is one of those questions to which there is no real answer. Your approach is as good as anybodys. How you feel is how you feel, I can't tell you how to feel. Honor yourself, recognize that you are unique in the universe and that you control your own reactions. So, if you want/decide that any given act is merely mechanical, so it is. Since you cannot control others, they might think differently about the same act...but then that's the beauty of the universe...diversity. Enjoy your intimate moments, and the mechanical ones as well. Happy New Year.

You got it. Intimacy is much more than the mechanical act of sex - it is definitely more wholesome. It's a combination of emotional and physical aspects and it doesn't objetify the partner.

Intimacy is the physical bonding...cuddling, admiring each other's body, comfort, being close without ever being "one". It's the emotional aspect.

Sex is the physical act of intimacy at a different level.

i agree with you. Sex i see as just the physical act, without any real emotional connection, simply just for physical pleasure. But intimacy involves being connected on an emotional level too, feeling completely at one with the person you're with, somehow like you're on another level all together, being physically and emotionally satisfied.

You're absolutely right. I can have sex with a man and it means nothing more than a good time. Then I can have intimacy with my life partner where I am sharing my inner soul with him thorugh making love. Big difference.

Intimacy is closeness to the other person with varying degrees of clothing, to the last sock.

Sex is the act - which could be partially clothed. You can still make love partially clothed, what a rush!
