My friend has a very high metabolism. Some people think she's anorexic but she's not. She feels really bad about herself and I'd like to help her. So, I was wondering if there are any ways to lower her metabolism. Thanks.

There is another option. People like your friend are probably an ectomorph. She might want to compete as a professional runner or biker. She'll probably be successful and feel better about herself.

My metabolism too was supposed to slow down... I was 103 lbs per 5' 6'' in my adolescence and now I am 35 and still around 115-118. I started doing weight training and surprisingly I was able to put on *some* muscle. But I can still eat 2100 calories a day without blinking an eye.

Try to encourage your friend not to give a **** about what people think of her basing on her physical appearance. It's hard but it can be done. Skinny people undergo discrimination too.. it's different from overweight people but it's still discrimination. And if she is good looking, more discrimination is coming. I fight it all the time.

Let's see, things that "fire" your metabolism tend to be spicy. If it's just the way she is, then she might as well just eat more food! Some people would be thankfull for a faster metabolism, but if she doesn't want to seem greedy with the amount she takes in then I guess the opposite of spicy is the way to go. I hope she is eating all the required meals, alot of people skip breakfast. It doesn't matter if she eats midnight snacks, it will just make her less hungry the next day. I read that somewhere, most people think it turns straight into fat.

First she should check to see if she has a thyroid problem, as metabolism is controlled by the thyroid gland. Perhaps it's on the hyper side. A simple morning blood test will show this.

Soy and fluoride suppress thyroid function, so these 2 things will slow down metabolism a little bit.

Go on a very low-calorie diet. Your body will sense that it is being starved and will fight back by slowing down. "If you don't get enough calories, your metabolic rate can go down profoundly, says Callaway. Severely anorexic women, he says, burn 30 to 40 percent fewer calories a day- sometimes 50 percent- than women who eat normally. (In other words, an anorexic who takes in only 200-300 calories a day uses it up much more slowly that her normal counterpart.) It's not clear how much of a calorie deficit triggers a drop in RMR- there's probably a continuum. But, says Callaway, you can get into trouble by consuming fewer calories than your RMR requires. Thank You,

Tell her to eat before bed, eat a midnite snack, and always, always eat breakfast. I bet she doesn't eat breakfast...
