Erm, I eat christmas cake, shortbread and cheese with biscuits, drink champagne, hug people, watch the fireworks at Edinburgh Castle on the tv, or my neighbours' from my back garden. My dad and I get the fiddles (violins) out and people start dancing about. If I'm at a party I kiss the person nearest to me. Finish singing Auld Lang Syne. (You must do this holding hands, your arms crossed in front of you.) Shout "HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!" And wait for the tall dark and handsome first footer (my uncle) who carries a lump of coal. Obviously I don't do this all on the stroke, just thought you'd like to know what us Scots do at New Year!

In the Netherlands we have a 3 foot paper hot air balloon with a small fire below it. In the basket we all put small notes with things we did last year we are sorry about, and notes with things we do want to do better next year.

After midnight we cut the rope, or most people just have a brick in the basket that is removed. We all cheer when the hot air balloon goes up in the air.

The meaning behind this is that we hope that those who find the balloon the next morning reads the "sins" & "hopes" and preys for them, without knowing from whom they come. But (alas) most people won't do the preying anymore.

Still, it is a beautiful sight if you live in the city and see thousands of hot air balloons with little fires in their baskets rising up to the nightly sky. And it is a warming thought to think about all those positive plans people made.

Nothing. And I don't shout happy new year, I say it.

New Years isn't a big deal.
