I was thinking of ordering a duvet. Do they come filled or do you have to order the filling for them? I didn't want to spend that much on something that may be totally unneccesary.

A duvet and a duvet cover are two different things.... A duvet is a down feather filled comforter as opposed to a comforter, which is usually filled with synthetic fibers. A duvet cover is like a large pillowcase to put the duvet in. Duvet's themselves are usually just plain white or ivory. Duvet covers are great because:
1. You can change them often
2. You can decorate to fit the room
3. You can even put a normal comforter inside
4. You won't have to wash your duvet as often (sorta like the deal with your pillow and the pillowcase...)

Duvet is a french word which means down feathers.

It might be easier to think of it like a pillow and pillowcase. The duvet is the pillow. It can be made of a variety of materials and varied thicknesses. You can use it without a cover. The duvet cover is the pillowcase. It keeps the duvet clean and allows you to make changes/redecorate with ease. You will need to keep in mind the size - king, queen, etc but that it all you really need to know when getting a duvet cover.

Duvet covers are sold separately from the duvet pads due to the wide variety of pad quality, materials (some just synthetic, others wool and then different thicknesses). Need to pick the pad first and then the cover - coinciding purchase best. All in one is the comforter.

You always have to have the down comfort that goes inside of a duvet (unless specified that they both come ...which they usually don't) To get the best you can order from The Company Store, but unless you live in real cold weather, go to a discount store like Marshalls or TJ Max for the filler.
