We are a young couple and have lived in our home for about four years. We have only recently become acquianted with our neighbor as he has helped my husband repair a broken axel in our truck. Not only has the neighbor provided his help, he has also loaned us tools and even a few parts! I feel like we need to do something to say thank you, but what are my options. We would have them over for dinner, but he has a large family, and I feel like him being older, we don't have much in common. What would I talk about? We would give a gift, but what is appropriate and in our price range. Keep in mind we are a young couple and money is tight. A card, however, feels stupid, and like not enough. Please help me with any ideas for what would be the thing to do! Thank you!

A card would be sufficient but a card and baked goods, pie, cake, cookies would be extra special.
Don't be afraid to invite them over because they are older or have a big family, you don't have to serve steak, a casserole or stew would be fine With a veggie and rolls. Have a couple drinks, relax, you might be surprised how much you have in common or how much you enjoy their company.

I think it depends on how close you are with your neighbor. A thank you card would be appropriate. You could give a gift, if you choose, if the two of you are friendly most of the time. I'm sure some sort of thank you is in order though. Home-made cookies will make anyone's day.

Do you bake? Something made...(even easy like the boxed cakes or cookies) is a big enough thank you! Maybe a bottle of wine or something (what my parents to). A card is good as well.

Give them a gift card, give them a nice bottle of wine, offer to cut their lawn, if they have kids offer to keep them while they go out.

I would invite him, and his spouse if he has one, over to dinner. No need to invite the rest of the family. You might be surprised about having things in common!

I actually did this for my neighbor the other day. I baked some cookies and fudge for them . They would always appreciate food.
