From a mans perspective (well mine anyway).

Lager - socially (pref - Kronenberg)
Red Wine - at home (any brand that gets me happy quick)
White Wine tastes like vinegar to me
Gin tastes like dish water so stay away from that

it depends on why you are drinking
for spicy food beer is good
others you can chose your wine
to get drunk well wine has higher alcohol content so if you want to get drunk chose wine
if you want to stay sober chose beer
beer is cheapest but can make you fat
red wine is good for you but gives a hangover
i suggest a good pint of cheap white wine then dont plan to do much

It depends. What are you serving? Red for red meat, white for white meat, or either for vegetarian. Lager's good just for sitting around snacking. Were you referring to celebrating tonight? In that case it just depends on what you prefer. I prefer red as it's a little sweeter, normally.

try a stout or a porter beer ...look for one that uses chocolate malts, they usually say on he side, with the describe the beer. these beers are dark in color and many are creamy (buy cream porter if you can find it)...some also have coffee notes! these are nice sipping beers and usually contain a bit more alcohol than your bud/miller.
other than that id say try a white wine like "Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio" this stuff isnt heavy and has a very crisp taste. i think it kinda tastes like fresh mountain water and grapes/ apples
they sell it all over but hear is a link
