my research indicates low fertility and contraception, but tha doesn't seem to fit?

Another factor was the burning of the Cuyahoga River in Ohio. I was always taught that the river catching on fire is what upset Americans enough that politicians finally took action. Silent Spring was also another factor along with many other environmental catastrophes. Check out the wikipedia article below for more details.
