Usually uncooked shrimp are grey, cooked are pink. :)

North atlantic prawns are normally a grey-ish (maybe brown in other people's eyes) colour when they are fresh.........something to do with what they feed on. They go pink when they get cooked. That is why they are that colour when you buy them frozen and defrost them.

Most all the answers are immediately true, but just so you know, for reasons not totally understood, remarkably blue raw prawns or lobsters are farm raised. No one totally knows why the farmed ones are that colour instead of the grey of the wild, but they are.

Uncooked they are banded in alternate grey and white bands. Not very appetising really - when cooked the grey bands should turn a vivid orange colour.
