I'm wanting to lose weight... will jumping rope help?

Yes. But this is a very AGGRESSIVE exercise to do.
It is murder on your feet. The bottom of them.

The Step is also effective, and easier on your feet. Just put it by your bed and when you wake up, step up and down 5-15 minutes, and then again 5-15 minutes before you go to bed.

Shoes are recommended. The step has those lines that can scrape your feet.
