Then get a mixed breed.. pure breads are high strung and cost more money.. The best pets are the mixed. Hound and Retriever mixes are best. Unless you are going to breed to make a profit, stick with friendly mixes. Especially if you have kids

American Pit Bull Terriers are one of the most human friendly breeds that you will ever find. Genetically speaking it has been bred out of a pit bull to bite a human. The reason for this is because these dogs were originally bred for bull baiting and fighting other dogs. If a person unknown to the dogs had to get ino the pit to break apart two dogs that were aggresivley attacking each other and that person were bitten, typically the owner would kill that dog on the spot, so through years of this practice it was bred out of this breed to be aggresive towards humans. If raised and socialized properly this is one of the sweetest and loyal animals you will ever find. Also, because of their high tolerance to pain (again because of being bred to fight) they are one of the best dogs to have around children. a child can pull the ears, step on the tail or foot, etc. and the dog thinks nothing of it. Pit bulls are not for everyone. They can be very aggressive towards other dogs and household pets, but if you are able to spend time training and socializing your dog this is a breed I highly reccommend. I have 5 American Pit Bull Terriers that live with each other, 2 young children , and several other small animals. I have never had any problems with aggression towards any of my family members , any of our other pets, or even people unknown to the dogs that are invited into my home. The general public percieves this breed as vicious and dangerous mainly because they are educated by the media. ANY dog can be made to be aggressive and uncontrolable. I urge you to visit some respectable Pit Bull breeders and see for yourself just how friendly , loving and loyal this breed is with proper discipline, socialization, and training.

Heres some online guides to choosing a breed that will fit into your household and lifestyle. Make sure you don't mistake a shy dog or one that is extremely submissive, for one with a sweet temperament. Also plan to obedience train your dog, obedience training makes your dog much easier to live with and once you've lived with a trained dog, you won't want to live with an untrained dog ever again!

You want to take into consideration such things as size of dog you want, activity level of the dog, the kind of coat the dog has and what care it requires, and other breed characteristics. For instance, dogs such as St Bernards and some other heavy mouthed breeds tend to slobber a lot. Some breeds tend to be hyperactive and noisy. Toys and terriers tend to be hyper, noisy, nervous, and often are not good with children. Dogs with high levels of animal aggression or prey instinct are usually not safe with other pets. Very dominant or very independent dogs are also tough to train. Once you decide on a breed, seek out a knowledgeable breeder through the national breed club or AKC. A knowledgeable breeder should be able to answer questions about such things as advantages and disadvantages of the breed, health or temperament problems that are common in the breed (all breeds have some kind of health and temperament problems, and good breeders will be upfront about those problems with you).

A happy, friendly, well-behaved, healthy one! I'm not kidding!

The well-behaved part is your responsibility, but some dogs are just born to please. My lab is one of those dogs. I love my lab. Golden Retriever's are a good choice, too. Most dog breeds are pleasers. I'm not fond of macho dogs, but have known sweet German Shepherds. These dogs might be too big for you and they need plenty of exercise to stay at a healthy weight.

I also have a rescued Yorkshire Terrier. Very smart dog, but definitely wants to be in charge.

I've had a mixed mutt from the shelter that was the sweetest dog I've ever known; had her for 17 years. Aside from the macho dogs, it's pretty hard to go wrong. Start with the animal shelter and don't rush your decision.

You need to consider your place that you live- is it a house? apartment? a townhome? Your living arrangements> do you work full time? part time? Can you be available to take it to the Vet when needed etc... There are alot of questions to ask yourself before getting any dog- but one thing I wish you would consider if your willing to buy a dog- look at your local animal shelter first- there are lots and lots of puppies and dogs that are needing a home or they will be killed!!! Give one a home and it will be the BEST dog you could get! I promise! They charge a small fee for shots etc... but it is cheaper than paying $200/$300 for a Pure bred.

Siberian Huskys and Labradors are naturally sweet
Huskys are almost always gentle and passive when they mature though they need sufficient excercise...they r beautiful too, they are medium sized dogs so they won't be HUGE and my huskys are easy to handle..
If you cannot give your doggies a lot of excercise because u don't do that much excercising yourself, or you wont have the time for hour long walks, get a small breed
Yorkshire terriers are really sweet so r bichon frisses

Please adopt a dog from a shelter. There are so many dogs with out homes. They have plenty of puppies if you must have a puppy, but an adult dog that is already house trained can be nice, especially if you're busy. Mixed breeds are typically healthier than purebred dogs because they have more variance in their DNA, they're less apt to have hip/eye/skin problems that so many purebreds are subject to.
A mix with labrador or golden retriever will generally have a very loving and faithful personality. Sometimes there are even purebreds at shelters, if you must have one.
Good luck.

if you want a large dog i would get a lab. they are very smart and loyal, and not aggressive.
if you want a small dog i would get a shih tzu. they love affection and sitting in your lap.
but you can never go wrong with a pound puppy. i think it is great to give a home to a dog that does not have one.
what ever you decide i would do some research to make sure that you get the right fit for your life.

Whether or not a dog turns out sweet is totally dependent on how it is raised. I have had a lot of different breeds, and they have all been great dogs.

Labs are sweet, loving and even though I love them, they can be slow. I've never seen an aggressive one, but I'm sure they are out there. Has to be far between though. If your living in an apartment though you may want to try something smaller like a Jack Russell.
