Hi there...depending on the type of chocolate the reaction will vary. In general chocolate contains theobromine which is also toxic to cats.
http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/nutritiondogs/a/chocolatetoxici.htm
Signs of chocolate toxicity are most commonly seen within 12 hours (or less) of chocolate ingestion.
- Excitement / nervousness / trembling
- Vomiting / diarrhea
- Excessive thirst / sometimes excessive urination (at higher levels of Theobromine toxicity)
- Muscle spasms
- Seizures
- Coma (rare
- Death (rare) -- likely due to heart rhythm abnormalities.
In cats particularly:
- It increases the rate and force of contractions of the heart.
- It acts as a diuretic, causing your pet to lose body fluids.
- It affects the gastrointestinal system, causing vomiting and - diarrhea and it may cause stomach ulcers.
- It acts on the nervous system, causing convulsions, seizures and sometimes, death.

. Chocolate contains chemicals which rarely cause problems for humans, but for cats and other domestic pets, these chemicals can, in rare cases, be deadly. Chocolate contains the compound theobromine which is a diuretic as well as a cardiac stimulant. This can cause the pet's heart rate to increase or it may cause the heart to beat irregularly, both of which can be dangerous to the animal. The level of theobromine present in chocolate varies depending on the type of chocolate. Dark chocolate contains higher levels than milk chocolate and so could pose a greater risk to your pet. There are many problems that can result from feeding a cat chocolate. Chocolate is relatively high in calories so it can contribute tothe development of obesity in your cat. A cat can lose itsappetite for it's normal food if it eats chocolate. The largest problem is though the fact that chocolate contains the chemical theobromine as mentioned above. If this chemical builds up in the cats system, it can be potentially lethal, and one reason for this is that cats cannot clear theobromine from their bodies as quickly as people can

its the chocolate liqueor in the chocolate that is harmful for animals. you can actually get chocolates for pets, and even ice cream for them, that dont have that ingredient so they're animal friendly. my aunt gives her dog ice cream treats all the time.
check out a store called "rocky mountain chocolate factory", i've seen different pet chocolates on there. and you can find "tasty paws" ice cream at a lot of grocery stores.
but, normal chocolate IS bad for cats, though they'd probably not mow it down like a dog might.

It's bad for them too, but I don't think most cats would eat much. Whereas dogs seem to eat anything.
Just to be safe, I never leave any chocolate-covered chicken fingers on the counter ;-)

my cat has eaten chocolate buttons on occasion with no ill effect so it would depend on the amount of chocolate. My cat only ever eats one at any time she would much rather eat ham cheese or chicken.

My cats love chocolate! It hasn't hurt them a bit. I've heard it won't be good for them in the long run, but they are all healthy and happy right now.

It depends if you give them a little bit then it will not have any effect on them like if you give them a few licks of the top of a choclate ice cream container, but if you give them like a lot like a hershy bar they will probly get sick and if that is what happens then get them straight to a vet as soon as possible

I give my cat chocolate, ice cream, milk, apple sauce, meats, yogurt, frozen yogurt basically anything with milk in it and she's fine, I've been doing it for 13 years I think she would have died by now.
