Simply put: an Australian Cattle Dog would suit you. Really awesome breed that bonds with their family. Meant to herd cattle and get along fine with other farm animals when raised. They can be stubborn but they are super intelligent and can learn fast if you have patience. They tend to enjoy the water and are very protective. Obviously you should do your own research on the breed to make sure it's what you want/what will fit you, but based off what I read I think this is the perfect breed for what you are looking for. EDIT: I just thought of a couple other breeds who might fit...Koolies, Australian Kelpies, or a Catahoula can also fit the bill. I tried looking for ACD breeders near you but all the breeders I could find were "show line" breeders, and I think you would be better off with a working line ACD.

Is this dinner for New Years Eve or New Years Day?
If for tonight (New Years Eve):
Keep it simple - but festive - cook something a little different from you regular dinners. Some type of ethnic dishes would be fun such as Mexican or oriental. You could also just do steaks, baked potatoes and salad - this is common but also a type of celebration meal.
