I'm in a situation where I may need to use a laundromat and it just seems a bit unsanitary to share washers and dryers with a bunch of strangers. Maybe I'm just overreacting. thanks for any feedback

Sanitary, yes. The temperature & volume of water cleans the machine.

If by safety you mean safe from crime, it depends on the location.

I think so. After many years of owning our own home (and having our own washer and dryer), my wife and I bought a boat on which we've now lived for seven years. Boats (unless they're really big ones) don't have laundries aboard. We cruise the East Coast, Bahamas and Caribbean, and use laundromats extensively. We're careful, and a little picky, and in all that time we've never had a problem from crime or dirty machines. Just clean the dryer's lint filter, and don't get embroiled in political discussions with the other customers. Happy laundering, and Happy New Year!

There are some really well kept laundromats out there. They keep the washing machines really clean inside and out. You will be able to tell as soon as you walk in whether it has been kept up or not just by looking at the place. Avoid the dingy looking places.

Of course, there is nothing unsanitary about the washers and dryers. I would suggest that you carry some sanitizing wipes with you and before you use the machines. try and just wipe it inside and out ( only the control panels and the lid) and then use it..Hope it helps.

Yes, you are overreacting. Be like other ppl,........ use it or you will smell bad with all your dirty laundry.
