You don't need a lawyer - just go to this website here http://www.copyright.gov/ and the US copyright office will tell you what you need to do.
Good Luck!!!

You own the copyright automatically. Its not like a patent that you have to apply for and have granted/rejected. See the 'Obtaining and enforcing copyright' section of this page.
However it does say - while a copyright need not be officially registered for the copyright owner to begin exercising his exclusive rights, registration of works (where the laws of that jurisdiction provide for registration) does have benefits; it serves as prima facie evidence of a valid copyright and enables the copyright holder to seek statutory damages and attorney's fees (whereas in the USA, for instance, registering after an infringement only enables one to receive actual damages and lost profits).
Please read the whole section and check it against advice elsewhere. Without registration, how do you prove you created the work on a particular date?
Put 'copyright John Smith' or whatever on the CD. I don't think you need the C in a circle symbol anymore. You can also use a program to embed a digital watermarks as low-level sound with your copyright information in each tracks. This can't be removed by copying to analog tape, etc. You can use it to prove copyright ownership. You can also embed blocks of digital info in tracks.
