We live away from our nephew and it is a pain in the butt to ship birthday gifts to him. He's turning 6 in January. At what age would be okay to start giving him cash and a bday card? Or would a gift card be more appropriate? Or is he not old enough for either?

I have to say that cash should never be sent in the mail. Having said that, a check or gift card is appropriate for any age. Our son is now 11 & he has always been given money for birthdays & Christmas. Our policy as parents is that any cash (or check) that he receives has to be split between his savings account & his pocket. That way half of all cash goes into his savings. The gift card thing put a monkey wrench into that plan however. You cannot divide one of those!! LOL
Seriously though, there is no reason for you not to send a check or a gift card.

Considering the fact you guys do not live near your nephew, I think a gift card is nice. Cash is great, but not good for in the mail. Also this lets your nephew know he can spend the money at his fav store to buy something he wants....not have to save the money and put in the bank. Not that I am against it, but for that age, they should be spending their money on things they want. Otherwise, ask the parents what he would like. You can always buy something online and have it shipped to him, kids LOVE getting stuff in the mail!

2 of my kids recently had a birthday, and they both got cash from family back home. They are age 7 and 9 and had tons of fun spending it. My daughter is 5 and she got cash for Christmas this year and allthough she's not as eager about it as the boys are, she still 'gets' the money thing somewhat, but I still have to help her out a bit. So any age before 5 might be a little young, but I'm sure Mom or Dad won't mind getting them what they want or need with the money or giftcard. :)

What about a gift card to a kid-friendly store, like Toys R Us, or something the parents can easily take him to in order to get what he'd like? This way, you're not spending a ton for shipping and possibly getting him something he's already got, too young/old for, or just not interested in, and it's not just cash he can blow on junk. Talk with his parents first and see what stores they are comfortable with, and then go from there.

A gift card is better. Kids love gift cards now. A six year old will spend cash but may buy candy or something with it (or lose it)

Anytime. Or consider a gift certificate to a national toy store chain or department store so that he can go with his parents and pick out a toy he likes for himself. Cash works fine, but you may not want to send that in the mail. If you do, put it in a card and mail it and then email or call to let the parents know that it is in the mail so that they can watch for it. Hope this helps! Happy NY!

Any age is a good age. The parent of a younger child can go to the store and pic out toys or what ever it is the child needs and explain that it came from you. My son is going to be seven soon, and he already understands that gift cards mean a trip to where ever. He was getting them at three and I would go to the store and go by the gift, wrap it and put whose ever name on it. I would write that person back, tell them what my son got, and when my son called to say thank you they knew what he was talking about. We have a lot of family out of town.

It depends on the 6 year old. Mine had a very good grasp of money at this age others don't know hte difference between $5 and 5 cents. If the parent is willing to help him spend it I would send money too

My son gets gift cards from Toys-R-Us all the time from out-of-town residents. He loves it. We get to go to the store together and he gets to pick out his "special gift" from Uncle John.

Another benefit is that Uncle John gets to save the $10 on wrapping and sending the gift which is a total waste of money.

My grandkids loved that they got a wallet and cash for christmas from their maternal great grand parents( they are nearly 6 and nearly 7). Let him learn the value of money now, before he starts thinking that he deserved everything he asks for. Teach him what he can buy for $20.
