It's Taurine - an essential nutritional substance for cats which can help prevent blindness and certain types of heart disease.

"Cats cannot synthesize sufficient taurine from other amino acids so they must have enough taurine supplied in their food. Humans and dogs, for example, synthesize taurine from the aminoacids methionine and cystine.

In the wild, rodents formed a large part of the feline diet, and the rodents had significant levels of taurine in their brains. When cats became domesticated and fed on commercial cat foods instead of their wild diet, taurine deficiency started appearing. Since taurine is thermolabile, it must therefore be supplemented in the diet of the domesticated cat."

It is taurine which is destroyed in the process of cooking and is added in synthetic form to all cat food. Cats cannot make taurine in their bodies - humans and dogs can. There is no taurine added to dog food and that is why your cat cannot live on dog food.
