There're many, but the name of the discpline often has some meaning from the family of the founder of the discipline. but mostly it's what the founder (or Founders) found in one discipline they studied (or sometimes more) and modified or changed it to suit them and incorporate what they've found in their studies to change the discipline and therefore gave it a different name.

There were originally three styles of karate practiced in Okinawa , They were named for the town / province , they were taught in . Now there are many styles and sub styles . Most are based upon the founders preferences ,such as what to put emphasis on in training . Here are a few styles :
Shotokan
Wado Ryu
Goju Ryu
Shorin Ryu
Ishin Ryu
Ryu Te

There are several styles of Karate, best known are Shotokan, Gojoryu & Shorinryu. Frequrntly, when people talk about styles, they are refering to Karate, Tae Kwan Do, Shaolin Boxing etc.
