West Indies?

The term "Caribbean" came from the Carib Indians residing on the islands. The Caribs were known to be fierceness, meaning that they weren't afraid of anyone. It was said that they ate the flesh of male enemies for food, or ritual purposes.

The term "West Indies" was a name that Coloumbus gave the islands to determine the difference between the East Indies (India) and the West Indies.

The Caribbean is split up into different groups.

The Greater Antilles
-Cuba
-Jamaica
-Puerto Rico
-Hispanola (Haiti/Dominican Republic)

Lesser Antilles (Leeward Islands)
-Montserrat
-Antigua & Barbua
-St. Eustatius
-St. Barthelemy
-St. Kitts & Nevis
-Saba
-St. Martin (French)
-St. (Sint) Maarten (Dutch)

Lesser Antilles (Windward)
-Guadeloupe
-Martinque
-St. Vincent & the Grenadines
-Dominica
-St. Lucia
-Grenada

Netherland Antilles
-Curacao
-Bonaire
-Aruba

Columbus initially called them Indies when he "discovered" them.

The Greater Antilles include the island countries of Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic (Hispaniola), and Puerto Rico.

The Lesser Antilles are the much smaller islands to the southeast, and they are divided into two (2) groups, the Leeward Islands and Windward Islands.
