does not hurt constantly, only when bumped or when i try to rest my head in my hand or bend it certain ways. presently i am not able to put that hand on my hip because the way it stretches the wrist hurts too bad!!! i do not recall ever injuring my wrist- no accident, fall, etc... very confusing. the area is hot and has slight swelling.

It's called cellulitis. You need to go to the doctor and get diagnosed and treated. Probably with antiimflammitories.

Jammed? Sprained? A fractured bone? There are many small bones in the hand between the finger joint and the wrist, and there could be many reasons for pain and swelling. Any time these are present, a doctor should be consulted.
