Generally, it's sort of a pre-engagement ring, when the couple is either too young or just not ready to be engaged. It's meaning is more determined by the giver and the wearer, though, and should be discussed to be sure that you both see it as representing the same thing.

It's a promise to be married at a later date, but it could also work as the engagement ring itself. Sometimes, if the couple can't afford a traditional engagement ring (or would prefer to use their money elsewhere), they'll buy a promise ring and use it as such. A promise ring usually has a much smaller diamond and costs around $100 - $200.

It's supposed to be a promise to become engaged someday, or a promise to stay faithful, but in my experience it's either just a way to get into a girl's pants or, as someone else put it, a "shut up" ring to keep her from nagging about marriage. I've never seen anyone get a promise ring and then end up married.

A promise ring is a symbol that some one cares. You are special to them. It means when you look at this ring think of me.

Many people take it to be a pre-engagement ring, but, I don't know if I buy into that. If you ask me, if you need a ring to say "we'll get married someday, just not yet" it's probably not a very good bet.
So I would personally take it to mean that it's a very sweet gift that someone who cares about you thoughtfully picked out.

---to me a promise ring can be for a gf and bf who haven't been dating very long or a couple who has been together for a long time even married couples.
it shows that you think the relationship is real and isn't going anywhere anytime soon and your not going to give it up without a fight first. ---
