Religion was invented long before copyrights. Plus, I'm not sure you could copyright religion, since it's more of a concept than an actual thing.

Religion has been here since the first caveman began to worship fire. But, as you point out, they did not copyright it. So that means we can use fire today with no surcharge.
Religion as a money making tool belongs to the Catholics, and other similar religions like the Protestants, Episcopalians, etc. You can put your dough in the collection basket, instead of sharing it with your employees, and try to buy your way into Heaven. I really hope that don't work.

Have you seen Mr. Hubbard's work? It's called Scientology. He made a lot of money. Still he was an idiot by the standards of a lot of men and women. Smart in the eyes of a lot of other men and women.
On a note about the invention of religion. Who? Some unknown from about seventy millenniums ago was probably the first one to create an organized form of spiritually fulfilling their lives to explain away the night and the stars. Death and pain, wild beasts and fire.
God Himself was always here and He will always be here. He did not invent Himself and He did not have to invent religion. He just showed Himself to us; bit by bit. You take it from there.

Most religions came out before copyrighting and royalty payments. To make money out of a religion the inventor came up with the concept of offerings and tithing.
