My family traditions (this is a very strong tradition -almost religion) is that they are eaten the first day of the new year. The reason would be that the dish is symbolic of what you wish to receive for the remainder of the year.
Peas = peace for the family
Jowls (hog jowls) = health for the family
Rice = riches for the family

Southern tradition is New Years Day! Also have some greens (collard, turnip, mustard or cabbage is fine). And as with a southern meal of this type - always serve the cornbread!:)

I would eat them whenever you wanted to eat them.. more importantly, how would you cook them and would you eat them for dinner on new years eve of first thing in the morning on new years day?? AND do you have to pay royalties to their record label?? Lets get it started!!
