Advanced Placement- thats the official name given by the College Board. It refers to the fact that there is a required test at the end of the year. For example an AP US History Class will give a college level US history exam at the end of the year scored on a 1-5 basis. Typically it is graded like a normal high school class homework attendance, tests, but if you want college credit it depends solely the final test. It depends on the school, but an average state school will give you credit for a 3 if you're goin to stanford, you better get a 5. Everything else is in between.

AP stands for Advanced Placement. It's a more advanced class like one step up from basic Chemistry, or an English class that is more like college or grad school english versus highschool or basic college 101. Harder classes generally and weigh heavier on boards than easy classes.
