He painted nude portraits of Hindu gods and goddesses and because of this he was alleged to have been "promoting enmity between different groups ... by painting Hindu goddesses — Durga and Sarswati — in an uncharitable manner hurting the sentiments of Hindus". Some felt that such a depiction was blasphemous.

M.F.Hussain is an artist who relishes controversies, for right or wrong reasons, which in my opinion could be avoided. He is a free thinker, but which I think his religion will not allow. Hence he turns to paint figures from epics and stories of other faiths that allows full freedom to express his art. But some times when he exceeds his limit unfortunately he gets into controversies.

An artist should be free to paint nude gods or goddesses, an example in Occidental art is the beautiful "Madonna" by Edvard Munch.
Of course such nudes can hurt some people's moral or religious feelings, but no one is obliged to look at them! My personal saying is "If you don't like it, ignore it" -with exception for indecent pictures (but then, what is "decent" and what is not ?)

He is a maverick among the artists. A artist and a genius in that cannot be bound within the society's mores and any attempt to confine him to the four walls of conventional wisdom and morality will inhibit the free flow of an artist's imagination. An artist of his calibre and talents should be nurtured by the society.
