I heard a radio ad about social anxiety disorder and I have all of the "symptoms" but I've always thought that I was just introverted and it seems to me that maybe it's just a ploy to get people to buy whatever drug that is and not a real disorder.. has anybody taken these meds? Do they work? Is it a real disorder?

I was a very introverted shy non talking child. then when I got to age 15 I decided to do something about it. and read a number of positive thinking books. took some mind control type courses and now I am a great salesman.though inside I am still introverted to a degree. I developed a way to counter it.with practicing positive thinking a person can over come a lot of there problems. though I don't know really about all cases.keep the faith.having faith helped me.Theres much a person can do with practicing positive methods of living.get some books on positive thinking and practice the methods .I wish you the very best in life.

It's real...but it's different from being introverted. I'm just an anxious person by nature and I don't like people too much. Doesn't make me a candidate for social anxiety disorder it's just my general anxiety showing it's face. The people who stay in their homes and don't ever go out because they might have to interact with someone...they have social anxiety disorder. Now having said that...if what you're feeling causes you to not lead your life the way you'd like to then seek help. Just because you don't have it really bad or as bad as someone else doesn't mean that your feelings are any less valid or that you can't take advantage of the help that some people can offer. Personally with medication (this is purely a personal belief) I think that there are some disorders in some people that the medicine just isn't essential for. If you just have slight anxiety over something then therapy can probably help you a ton. If it's an overwhelming crippling fear that is completely preventing you from living your life at all...well then obviously you might need a little more help. OK bottom line is if it's effecting your life...talk to someone about it who really knows what they're talking about (therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, etc). Let them make the decisions concerning medication not a commercial.

It is very real. I was diagnosed with social phobia a few years ago and can say with out a doubt that social anxiety disorders are not just a ploy by drug companies. I use to have anxiety attacks when faced with going into social situations and avoided them at all costs. Meds and therapy helped but I still have trouble. Of course I am not on meds at this point it is not as bad as it use to be. I want to go back on my meds because there was a difference in how I felt then and how I feel now.

Yes, it is real. But be careful, there is a very thin line between being overly shy and having social anxiety disorder. Make sure you see a psychologist or even a psychiatrist for a few visits first to make sure that you actually have a disorder. You can mess up your brain by taking drugs that alter your brain chemistry, if indeed it turns out that you do not have the disorder.

It's just a new name for what people have always called "Shy" or "Introverted."

If it gets you to the point where it makes you so uncomfortable that you feel the need to seek help to correct it, then you have a problem.

I just generally dislike most people and do not find pleasure or enjoyment in social interaction because it is really just never worth it in the end.

Be honest with yourself and your condition. You are not just a ball of symptoms you know! There may very well be a reason you generally tend to shy away from most people... Most people (although they all have there indivisual merits, most are idiots.) Not wanting to be around that... Well I personally don't see that as a problem!

You must talk to a doctor, they WILL help you. You may have social anxiety disorder, but the lack of friends make me think it is depression, you can still have friends and be anxious about social interactions. Please see a doctor, you don't know how much netter you may feel after some sort of medication.

yes doll I've been on those meds for awhile, since i was 15 and I'm 21 now. i couldn't go into school, the mall, anywhere public without feeling like i was dying, having a heart attack..it is real, and these meds can help; help you cope with the stress until you feel stable enough to get off of them, and trust me, you will. :O)

I was suspected of having it. I actually have a little bit of it. So it is definately real. You shouldn't diagnose yourself from a radio ad though because you just might be introverted. You should see yourt doctor about testing if you suspect you have it.

Yes, I'm on meds for this too.

I find it hard to say if they work. I'm also having therapy and I can understand why that helps but not why the pils do. Still, my psychiatrist seems to think they are helping
