Because of the Nag Hammadi Library (The Gnostic Gospels) and most importantly the included "Gospel of Philip" which indicates that Mary Magdalene was not a prostitue and she played a much larger role in Jesus' life than was previously admitted.
One of the more compelling lines is this.... "There were three who always walked with the Lord: Mary, his mother, and her sister, and Magdalene, the one who was called his companion. His sister and his mother and his companion were each a Mary."
The other passage referring to Mary Magdalene is incomplete due to damage to the original manuscript. Several words are missing. The best guesses as to what they were are shown below in brackets. Most notably there is a hole in the manuscript after the phrase "and used to kiss her often on her...." But the passage appears to describe Jesus kissing Magdalene and using a parable to explain to the disciples why he loved her more than he loved them:
And the companion of [the savior was] Mary Magdalene. [Christ loved] her more than [all] the disciples, [and used to] kiss her [often] on her [mouth? face? cheek?]. The rest of [the disciples were offended by it and expressed disapproval]. They said to him "Why do you love her more than all of us?" The Savior answered and said to them, "Why do I not love you like her? When a blind man and one who sees are both together in darkness, they are no different from one another. When the light comes, then he who sees will see the light, and he who is blind will remain in darkness."

Some people, interested in learning more, choose to read and learn from a variety of early Jewish and Christian writings. Some bibles contain a section called the Apocrypha, the Greek meaning: hidden things.
This term is used for a particular collection of early Jewish writings, that were excluded from the canon of the Hebrew scriptures. Books, include, Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach (also called Ecclesiasticus), First and Second Maccabees; the Prayer of Manasses, etc. The term Apocrypha is sometimes applied to early Christian writings that were, once considered canonical by some, but are not included in the New Testament.
Scrolls were, also, found in 1945, at Nag Hammadi, Egypt. There is a Gospel of Mary and a Gospel of Thomas among these texts. [And a copy of Plato's Republic, making 53 works in all. Originally composed in Greek, they were translated (2d–3d cent. A.D.) into Coptic. Most of the texts have a strong Christian element.]

Well it would have been unusual for a Jewish man to be a bachelor at the time because it was considered a mans duty to get married and have children. Then there are the gospels that were excluded from the bible that seem to indicate a relationship between them. Blessed be.

According to the gospel of Mary, they were not married. She was, however, his most trusted disciple. He healed her from illness and she followed him for the rest of his life. After his death she travel and spread his teachings. Peter was extremely jealous.
Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute. Many scholars believe that she must have been a widow because she had money.
