Your best bet is to keep the flash as far away from the lens. The most important thing is have plenty of lighting before the flash.

RED EYE .........?
If we stand in a dark atmosphere, the pupil of our eyes will be wide opened to see clearly the images around us.When we take a picture of some one with flash, the flash light reflects on the red blood vessels and particles inside our eyes through the widely opened pupil or retina. That's we say red eye. But if we take the same shot in a brighter place or in day light, the pupil will be small and we cannot see the red eye effect.
Now you can easly eliminate red eye...is it?
If it is even a darker place, bounce the flash ,not to get the flashlight directly in to the eyes.

If there is no flash, there can be no red eye as red eye is a product of flash- when the flash fires the light bonces of the retina of the eye hence the red eye.

like the answer before me said, if there's no flash there shouldn't be any red eye, if your camera has red eye reduction you should use it (only works along with flash) this makes little flashes before the real one to adjust the eye so it won't cause red eye. if there's still red eye you will just have to edit it using pretty much any editing software

if there is no flash, there should not b any red eye results bcos these happen due to the timings of the flash and shutter.
otherwise, red eye can b eliminated manually too, with the help of any good, easy software, like photoshop, google picasa(can download free here http://angle-mine.blogspot.com )
or even the simple paintshop can too suffice.
