Different translations of the bible would suggest love and charity are synonmus. Examples found in.1st Corrinthians ch. 13 vs. 1-17 illustrate this many times. I would enjoy hearing from a scholar of the languages used in those past times to clarify my understanding. The story of the "World's Poorest Philanthropist", Gilbert "Harold" Ewing II (myself) is the reason for this querry. The " act of grace", or charity, reffered to in the news interview, has posited this question and I lack the sort of education to provide any insights of true value.

idiom:
3. by the bye (or by): By the way; incidentally.
4. Bye-bye: goodbye
5. It is also a cricketing term which has something to do with the ball going wide and hitting the body of the batsman instead of his bat.

The bye you mean sounds the same but is spelled 'baai'. It is in the name of the Baahi religion, a derivative of Islam originating in Iran.
The other 'bye' meant 'passing'. Good bye, the longer form means good passing, or good journey. You also see it used in competitions, where a 'bye' means you don't compete that round, you 'pass' that round.

I have always been told that "bye" means "forever". I never say bye to anyone, because I strongly belive "bye" is the end.

Hmmm, don't know about THAT. But I can tell you it is a shortened version of Good Bye, which is a shortened version of Bon Voyage. Maybe your friends are right. It would be interesting to know.
