All the above answers are good, i prefer SpyBot along with the Microsoft malicious tool remover.
Also make sure you run Microsoft (windows) Update and consider upgrading to something other than Me soon. When Vista comes out in a month or so, XP prices will probably go on sale as retailers want to unload their supply. Consider grabbing one of those.

It sounds like you are infected with Spyware, not a virus. Download the following free program(s) and use them in this order:
1) SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition: http://www.superantispyware.com
2) Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=pop.software
3) SpyBot Search & Destroy: http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1
The first program, SuperAntiSpyware, is VERY good and should find and remove your Spyware problem.
