Depends on where you live. Are you in a neighborhood, or in the city, can you walk some where? Are you out in the country with a large yard?

Use your imaginations.

Make collages with clippings of magazes glued onto lage pieces of paper. Or play dress up, have a midevil day of princesses and knights. Foil if fun for that. So is cardboard.

Play hide and seek outside (stay with the 4 year old, theyre too good at hiding). Play hide and seek inside.

Bake cookies.

Put corn starch in water and stick them in the tub with a bowl of it. Its messy but provides hours of fun. It's easier to clean if the mess is in the tub.

Fill a tub with water and pull out some toys and let them play with them over the side of the tub.

Watch a movie.

Paint their faces with regular makeup. You can make them look like tigers or lions, dress them up like animals and let them hunt stuffed toys. Thats fun.

Anything that uses the imagination, or requires them to use their hands will keep them busy for hours.

You can go to Goodwill or a St. Vincent DePaul and buy games and some stuffed toys for little or nothing, keep them in a backpack and bring them with you when you babysit. Play games like Chutes and Ladders, or you can play Twister, you can play hide and seek, keep a big pad of cheap drawing paper in the pack, along with crayons and safety scissors (rounded ends) and glue sticks (washes right off) and make little pictures for their parents. Or holiday decorations if it's near a holiday when you sit for them. Setting up dominoes in patterns and knocking them down is fun for kids. Remember the attention span is short here, so have more than a few things for the kids to do. Tell them stories using the stuffed toys as the characters, read to the kids! Reading if very good for them, you can check out books from any local library and bring them along. All this is either really cheap or free. Good luck.

Story time can turn into mini plays with just a few props. Have them pick a character from the story to be and let them act it out. Use hats, dish cloths in the back of the shirt as capes... rolled up newspaper swords, etc. Encourage them to lead the play and this could last for hours.

Learning and singing songs together is also a hit in our house. You can find kids songs online if you don't remember many from your childhood. A few pots and pans make a great rhythm section.

Lots of free stuff online from stories to science project ideas. Try a few of the sites below or just type in a few keywords with "for kids" and the hits will start flooding in.

art...you can find lots of stuff around the house to do art projects.
Cooking ...Baking brownies or cookies.(supervised of course)
Walks...going to a nearby park or a walk around the block. Physical activity is always good for kids.
Reading...take an hour each day to read to them or have them read to you. Let them take turns picking the books.
Playing board games. Again let them take turns picking the games.
Role playing games..house..space ship..whatever they are into.
Building "blanket forts" are great fun too...Take some blankets and sheets from around the house (not the nice ones) and arrange the furniture and drape the sheets and blankets over them. you can build a mini underground city.
Kids that age love balls. Go in the yard and play catch or soccer.
Girls love playing with dolls and dress up.
Lots of fun things to do with kids that age. When in doubt...ask the kids what they like!

Well it depends on what state you're in and if you want to do thinks out doors or in doors, my daughter is 4 years old and we live in Ohio so going to the park is not an option. I always keep macaroni on hand so we can make pictures on necklaces, if you have flour, water, macaroni and food coloring there are a ton of things you can, you can also make pictures out of old magazines masks out of paper plates and even puppet shows, you can make sugar cookies and icing, kids love to help with stuff like that and it's really easy.

heres a link for a recipe for sugar cookies and icing.

You can even add a little food coloring to the cookies and or icing to make it fun for the kids. Good luck!!

Here's a few ideas:

- go to the play park.
- find out if there are any free child clubs in your area that they can attend (you'll find such info at your local church, primary school and community centres).
- play a few simple games like hide and seek, building dens out of sheets or telling stories..
- bake something together.
- go for a walk and make it an adventure (take a simple picnic with you or make it seem like you're hunting for something).
- some cinemas do very cheap deals during the holiday or early morning showing for kids' films.

Board games and coloring books and play doh are a safe bet but if they dont live 2 far away from a park or a library try and take them there that would guarantee them fun.

I'm not sure if I would play hide and seek. Can you imagine what would happen if you really couldn't find them? They wouldn't come out either because they want to "win". Or if their prents come home with them hiding... I would play with their toys with them. Maybe watch a movie. Let the 8 year old pick it out. Ask them what they want to do and they will be sure to have fun! Maybe you could make cookies?!! Let them mix and roll the cookies into balls. Good luck and have fun!

The library always has programs for children. Story time, crafts, even computer for young children. They might like just looking at the books and taking one home to read.

There is always the Park with swings and lots of space to run around and other kids.

You might take them to a pet shop to see the animals.

play board games, watch a movie, cook, read a book to them, go on a hike (tell the parents in case they try to call), color, make up a play they perform, build a snowman, go on a scavenger hunt, go to the library, ride a bus, sell hot chocolate or lemonade, etc. Use your imagination!
