He means exclusively by Him alone. Only He has made the atonement for our sins and only He could. That is why He was called the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world.

Jesus meant by believing in the spirit of what he was teaching. When preaching, Jesus never asked people to believe that he was the Christ. Actually, he told his disciples to keep this fact a secret.

Matthew 16:20
Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.

If Jesus was hiding the fact that he was the Christ, then obviously this could not be the gospel that he was preaching to the masses when he was still alive. He asked people to believe in his teachings and live their life accordingly.

Mark 1:15
And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Believing in Jesus is believing that there is a right way to live and treat other people, this is the gospel. You can believe that he is the son of God but that isn't what he asked people to believe. If you truly believe in his gospel, then it will show with your actions and not with your words alone.

First you have to ask did he say it? The gospels in the bible and there are only 4 our of the 30 or so that were written were written at least 60 years after it all happened so you don't know if the things reported as said by Jesus were said by him or the writer or writers just want people to believe he said them

I think Jesus means no one comes to the father unless they follow Jesus' example.

In Matthew 22:37-40 where Jesus gives the two great commandments; he did not add a third one to worship him as Deity.

A lot of the things in assorted religions do not have a basis in scripture.

He was speaking from the spirit within, "The christ". Not the physical man. This is as i understand it, a level of consciousness one must pass through to enter into full union with God. Where one is fully aware of his oneness with God, but is still aware of seperation. "God dwells within you as you" carnal man is unaware of this unity with God in unconditional love within his own heart. The purpose of life is to awaken to this reality, all else is like a dream. This is what jesus spoke of when he said i have come that they might have life more abundantly. There are many on earth now with the same power as jesus. The world is now being flooded with such saints, most work in silence. Jesus said to his diciples, the things i do you will do & even greater. One living Saint is Swami Chidvilasananda, see syda.org/theguru. The greatest spiritual awakening ever is taking place in our time.

From the beginning with Adam and Eve mankind messed up. Thus after years of God seeing how the world was going he was just going to end it all. However, Jesus came to earth to wash us of our sins. Thus we must go Through Jesus to get to God. Jesus was the one who saved us, (remember God wanted it this way also or it never would have happened). But due to Jesus' sacrifice for us, we approach God through Jesus.

The bible is sanctified chauvinism. It is geographical in nature. I'm quite certain Jesus the man or the demigod had no knowledge of the existence of North America. He was speaking to his people with little or no knowledge of other spiritual paths. The meaning, under these circumstances is obvious. If you want to meet his father, his god, you must do as he says.

He meant by believing in Him alone. You cannot enter heaven or get to God by being a "good person" because it is impossible for a human being to be good enough for that. That is why Jesus died on the cross, to pay the price of our sins so that we could get to God just by believing in Him. If you cannot believe in Him, then you cannot get to heaven or have a relationship with God. He isn't trying to be exclusive, that's just the way things are.

I think it means that he is his father's personal gate-keeper or bouncer, which seems to put him in competition with peter at the gates of heaven.

I think your idea of "all compassionate, loving people" is nice, but meaningless. All normal/healthy (an important qualifier) people are compassionate and loving, regardless of their religious beliefs. Nontheists are compassionate and loving too.
